Frequently Asked Questions

Please select from one of popular question categories below.

  • How do I reserve a car or van?

You can reserve a vehicle over the phone using a debit card, when we’ll take a £200 fully refundable deposit. Alternatively, you can reserve online for £99, or visit us to view and test drive the car in person before you reserve. Deposits can be paid by debit card, cash or bank transfer. Please note that deposits placed in person are considered a purchase deposit, so we will reserve the car until the vehicle is ready for collection. This type of deposit is non-refundable, but is transferable.

  • I’m unable to come to the dealership to view the car I’m interested in. Can you send me a walk around video or do a live video viewing?

Yes. We can send you a short walk around video of your chosen car. Alternatively, one of our sales team can call you via Facetime or WhatsApp video at a pre-arranged date and time to show you around the car virtually.

  • What do I need to bring with me to buy a car?

One form of photo ID to prove who you are - this can be a driving licence or passport, for example.

  • Can I test drive a vehicle?

Yes. We offer test drives 7-days a week on all vehicles displayed. Simply ask one of our team to arrange it for you. We simply require a photo card driving licence from you. If you only have a paper licence, we would need to see an additional photographic ID such as your passport. Obviously we don't charge anything for taking a test drive, but we do recommend booking a test drive before you visit us to avoid any delays when arriving on site.

  • Do you do HPI checks on all your vehicles?

Windmill Motors carries out an HPI check on every vehicle prior to it going on sale. This is to ensure it has no outstanding finance, has not been reported as stolen, and has not previously been written off by an insurance company.

  • Are all of Windmill Motors vehicles checked?

Every vehicle bought from Windmill Motors will undergo a comprehensive pre-delivery inspection, a fresh interim service if due and a new 12 months MOT with no advisories (if due within 6 months) before you collect your new car.

  • Are you open on weekends?

Yes. Our dealership is open on Saturday and Sunday. Our MOT and Service centre is only open Monday to Friday.

  • Do you offer home delivery?

Yes we offer nationwide transported delivery for our customers. Please enquire for a bespoke quote or visit our Home Delivery page for more details.

  • What do I need for a home delivery?

We will need your driving licence with your current address. However, if your driving licence does not list your current address or you would like to use your passport, we will also need to see a recent utility bill with the correct address on it. You will also need your photo ID when we deliver your vehicle.

  • How much does it cost to deliver a car to my house?

If you're interested in taking advantage of our home delivery service, we can make all the necessary arrangements to deliver your vehicle direct to your door. Please get in touch with us so we can provide you with a quote based on your requirements.

  • Do you take part-exchange vehicles?

We are happy to accept all types of vehicles for part-exchange. You can get a competitive price for your current vehicle from one of our team on site, or by visiting the Part Exchange page on our website. We will value your vehicle for free and hold the price for up to 7-days.

  • What documents do I need to bring with me?

You will need to bring your vehicle documents and proof of identity, including; V5 logbook, MOT certificate, service history details, owners manual, spare keys, plus any additional items or paperwork and repair invoices you may have. If a valid V5 logbook cannot be provided, you will be charged a £200 holding fee until this is presented (refundable within 28 days once a V5 logbook is provided – non-refundable thereafter). A valid UK photo driving licence or your current passport is required as proof of ID, plus two original documents providing your current address dated within the last three months (for example: a bank statement, council tax statement or any other utility bill).

  • Can I part-exchange my old car even if it has outstanding finance on it?

Yes. The remaining balance will go on the finance for the car that you will be purchasing from us and we can settle the finance on your current vehicle.

  • What do I need to do if I have a private number plate on my part-exchange?

You will need to put your private number plate on retention with the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) before you collect your new car from us. Please allow up to 5 working days for your documentation to arrive in the post once the retention has been completed. There is an £80 charge from DVSA for this. You can then transfer your private plate (free of charge) onto your new car once the V5 logbook arrives in your name. Please follow this link to retain your number plate:

    https://www.personalisedvehicleregistration.service.gov.uk/retain/vehicle-lookup.

  • What should I do if I have lost my V5 logbook?

If your V5 registration document/certificate (or the new keeper supplement) has been lost, stolen or destroyed, you will need to purchase a replacement from the DVSA at a cost of £25. You can complete a Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C Application Form (V62). This form is available from local Post Office branches, or can be downloaded by visiting: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-log-book.

If you have already registered as the vehicle keeper on the DVSA computer and there are no changes to your personal or vehicle details, you can apply for a duplicate copy by calling 0300 790 6802 using a debit/credit card for payment. If a valid V5 logbook cannot be provided, you will be charged a £200 holding fee until this is provided (refundable within 28 days once a V5 logbook is provided - non refundable thereafter).

  • Do I need to do anything with my part-exchange V5 logbook?

When you hand over your part-exchange V5, you need to keep Section 9 (Transfer to Trade) so you can sign, complete and return this part to the DVSA. The DVSA will then write to you within 30 days to confirm you've been removed from the vehicle record, and you will receive a road tax refund of any full month remaining from the DVSA.
