The Most Popular Car Colour in the UK

We reveal the favourite car colour for 2023 and the nation’s least favourite!

At a basic level, it is probably one of the most important decisions you can make about your next car; what colour do you want it to be? Whether you fancy something new and jazzy after muted tones on your previous cars, or you're sticking to what you know, you will need to like the look of the car you go for; after all, you will be seeing it fairly regularly.

What is the most popular car colour in the UK?

If you were already aware that grey has been the most popular colour for the four years prior to 2022, you may not be surprised to learn that grey has been announced as the most popular car colour in the UK for the 5th year in a row! A whopping QUARTER of new cars sold in the UK in 2022 were grey - 415,199 to be precise.

In fact, grey came out on top in all but one county in the UK - blue was the favourite on the Scottish borders, but grey wasn’t far behind in second place.

If monochrome is your thing, you’re not the only one; it was reported that 62.5% of new cars in the UK sold in 2022 were painted in black, white, or grey. That’s a pretty cohesive traffic jam!

What is the least popular car colour in the UK?

Heading towards the bottom of the list, you’ll find pink, cream and maroon - these only amounted to 1% of all new cars sold in Britain in 2022. Even colours such as orange, yellow, bronze, turquoise and mauve were all more popular!

In fact, we have several stunning grey cars at our used car dealership here in Lincolnshire. Here are some of the highlights from our grey stock…

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Let’s be honest, the Range Rover Sport looks pretty great in any colour, but it’s particularly incredible in Storm Grey. With only one previous owner, this model in particular has been well looked after, and is fitted with features to make your journey not only comfortable, but well connected too. From heated front seats and a leather interior to 360-degree parking sensors and voice control, it’s got everything you need for a smooth and convenient ride.

Volvo XC60

If you’re looking for a family car, you can’t go far wrong with an XC60. Take this 2016 model for example, finished in Osmium Grey Metallic and currently available at Windmill Motors. It comes complete with privacy glass, an automatic tailgate, split folding rear seats, and oncoming lane mitigation. There’s plenty of space inside for a growing family, and enough tech on board to keep everyone entertained and connected on the move.

Kia Ceed

A low mileage car is one with plenty of life left in it, such as this 2019 Kia Ceed - only 3386 miles on the clock! It’s bang on trend as a beautiful grey car, with a 1.4 litre engine making it ideal for around-town journeys and longer trips alike.

Inside, you’ll find satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay with voice control, and lane assist to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Peugeot 2008

This economical Peugeot 2008 is an SUV with real presence on the roads thanks to its rugged styling, and this 2018 model is finished in Cumulus Grey Metallic to give it that light grey look. Just some of its features to be wowed by include a panoramic glass roof, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and dual-zone air conditioning to keep you cool when the weather warms up.
